During WWII, Chapeau Rouge was closed, like much of Prague’s nightlife.
Under communism, the building even housed a psychiatric ambulance — an unusual chapter that ultimately preserved the venue during decades when independent nightlife culture was restricted.
The building survived. Many venues didn’t.
After the war, Chapeau Rouge reopened with two upstairs bars.
By the 1990s, it became part of Prague’s underground techno and electronic scene. DJs like DJ Tráva helped shape its identity as a venue driven by atmosphere rather than luxury branding.

In 2003, Chapeau Rouge became one of the first regular stops for structured pub crawl routes in Prague — built around real venue relationships and genuine nightlife knowledge.
That same year, the downstairs club floor officially opened.
In 2007, the underground lower club was added, completing its three-level structure and reinforcing its reputation as a place where nights escalate naturally.
